Built on a 2,000,000 square meter lot, its operations started in 1984 with a 5,000-foot runway and a small terminal that lodged a departure gate and customs into a small 300-square meter building.
Developed and owned by Dominican businessman Frank R. Rainieri, President of Grupo Punta Cana, and New York attorney Ted Kheel, Punta Cana International Airport is a modern facility with state-of-the-art traffic control and communication facilities, a new fuel farm, regulated airfield and approach lighting systems, a new parallel taxiway capable of handling the New Large Aircraft (NLA) being developed by Airbus (3XX-200), expanded ramp parking for narrow body, wide body, jumbo aircraft, and modern safety and security systems, to include a new Oshkosh T-3000 fire truck, Baggage X-Ray equipment, and aircraft ground servicing equipment.
Other airport facilities include Customs, Immigration, Agriculture, VIP lounge, medical services, duty free zone, cafeterias, catering services, bank and money exchange, telephone service air and ground taxi services, tour bus operations, major rental car services, and the Punta Cana Viajes y Turismo Office.
During high season, it receives up to 250 weekly flights, with some weekends reaching up to 65 international flights. At present, Punta Cana Airport receives 48% of all flights and passengers that arrive into the country, according to Central Bank statistics, making it the busiest and most important airport in the Dominican Republic.
Most of the hotel resorts can be reached within a 10-40 minutes drive from Punta Cana airport.
